I have started design and getting components to the new octo.
I am building it using aluminium, and anodising it a funky colour. I have found some boom clamps from a Razor 600E tail boom costing £4.99 for a set of 4...nice and cheap. They are also the perfect size, taking a 3/4" ali tube (19.1mm diameter) which looks nice and chunky.

I have bought jdrones 880kv motors and 30A ESC's from www.buildyourowndrone.co.uk

Here are some images that I modelled to make sure everything goes together okay. I will get the center plates water jet cut so they are nice and neat.

I also decided to house the esc's & power distribution on their own level, with enough space for airflow.

Very nice. Just one suggestion that I had read in the past. It may not be a good idea to run the motor wires on the outside into the boom. If you land on the end, you stand a chance of cutting the wires.

Thanks for the comments Pintac. The wires will go inside the boom and come out at the end where the boom is. I am also busy redesigning the lower motor mount plate - it will be extended and folded up so that I can fit led's onto it. This will protect the motor wires...I'll post a pic a bit later.

I haven't decided yet, but thinking of the Wookong...looks the most stable but still doesn't have all the features I ideally want...I have had many sleepless nights trying to work out what FC to use!!

This is currently my favorite thread. It all looks very promising. Good job.

But, what happens when the airflow from the propeller hits led holder? Led holder looks quite large, plus that it is angled.
My suggestion, fold it under the engine mount and make it slimmer (so you can access the screws).

Thanks for the comments. Yes, you are right, it is quite big. What I will do is have another look at it when the LED's arrive (hopefully today)

Could you not mount the lights directly under the motor save the extra metal and turbulance?

Did you get your LED from William?

Dave, unless the led's have 180° field of view, they will be difficult to see when the heli is low. The idea with the 45° plate is that the led's will always be at the optimum position to see well. If it causes any problems I can always have new plates made and try again, I don't expect they will be too expensive.

Yes, I bought them from William, but they still haven't arrived yet. I can't wait!

Dont think you need 180 unless you are grass cutting! (see up and coming video from my strimming video)

Once its up above you I think under mounted lights would be fine.. I have just ordered a load of stuff from william and will post pics as soon as I get them.. I got one of the search lights for orientation.. Dave

Actually I did intend on putting 2 LEDs under the mount, if you look at my first motor mount pic you will see 2 holes. Problem is that there isn't much space in that bottom plate, specially for the led I've bought, it has a threaded stud coming out the back for +ve connection. I'll have a tinker with design again to see if I can make it a bit smaller.

I did a whole lot more modelling tonight. Mounting plates altered, landing gear added, props added, led holders made smaller, slots added for weight reduction...

I made motor to motor c/c distance 900mm in case I want to use larger 13" props. I will start with 12's but at least I can upgrade.

I still don't have any photohigher dimensions to detail the mounting shafts underneath, so that will come soon. (if someone has a photohigher mount and vernier, you could also help me with dimenions!!)

Any constructive comments are appreciated...

Have you got this image? Some careful measurement in Photoshop should give you most of the dimensions you'd need to model it.

Jes, very helpful again! Thanks, that will let me make sure the landing gear is the correct size.
